Two Products from PHOTONIS selected as Prism Award Finalists
Sturbridge, MA - PHOTONIS USA, a leading electro-optic component manufacturer, is pleased to announce that the company has had two of its newly released products chosen as finalists for a Prism Award for Photonics Innovation. The top three finalists in each category were announced on November 8th. The winners will be announced at the SPIE/Photonics West 2011 Conference, held in January in San Francisco, CA.
The Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation is an international competition for companies that recognize photonics products that break conventional ideas, solve problems, and improve life with photonics. PHOTONIS’ nominated products were the Gen2 UltraFast™ Time-of-Flight Detector within the Life Sciences and Biophotonics category, and the Optical Communications Detector within the Information and Communications category. PHOTONIS is the only company which had two products selected to compete as finalists, and it is the first time PHOTONIS products have been nominated.
The PHOTONIS Gen2 UltraFast™ TOF Detector was engineered to improve resolution in time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The new TOF detector is capable of doubling the temporal resolution of an ion time-of-flight mass spectrometer at low mass, leading to significant improvements in mass resolution. The detector uses PHOTONIS’ MountingPad™ 2µm pore microchannel plates which use TruFlite™ MCP flatness technology. A patent for the MountingPad™ technology was awarded to PHOTONIS in 2009.
The PHOTONIS Optical Communications Detector was engineered to provide greater optical communication speeds using a photomultiplier tube without degradation in signal. The new Optical Communications Detector achieves this goal by providing a large detection area in order to optimize the sensitivity, while still enabling the detector to approach speeds of 2GHz. An anode redesign allowed a reduction in the voltage, providing a 3-5x improvement over other photomultiplier tubes on the market. A patent application for this product has been submitted.
PHOTONIS Technologies President and CEO, Goossen Boers, said, “We are honored to have been selected as finalists for the Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation. To be nominated for such a prestigious award is a testament to the continued commitment to innovation and technology we have within PHOTONIS.”
PHOTONIS is a multinational high-technology group, with more than 40 years experience in manufacture, sales and innovation, specializing in photo sensor technology.
